Base- & topcoats

To ensure that your nail polish lasts longer, it is important to use both a base coat and a top coat. A base coat creates an adhesive layer that helps the nail polish adhere better, while a top coat protects the nail polish and extends its durability. The best combination is one layer of base coat, two layers of colored nail polish, and one layer of top coat. It is recommended to use a base coat and top coat from the same brand as your nail polish for optimal effect. Some nail polishes have a built-in base coat, but additional products may be necessary depending on the condition of your nails.

Why you should use basecoat and topcoat

If you want your manicure to last, basecoat and topcoat are a really good place to start.

A basecoat helps create an adhesive surface that your nail polish can stick to better. Often, a basecoat dries with many tiny holes in it—holes you can't see. These holes allow your nail polish to settle into them, which helps it adhere better to the basecoat than it would to the natural nail. This ensures that the nail polish has the best possible conditions to stay firmly on the nail.

A topcoat is a protective layer on top of your nail polish. If you use a good nail polish, you won't experience chipping or cracking, but rather that it wears off at the tip. A topcoat helps to protect your nail polish even more, so it's the topcoat that wears off first before the color does. I often reapply the topcoat several times during the 7-10 days my nail polish usually lasts. After about 2-4 days, I've worn off the outer layer of the topcoat, and that's when my nail polish will start to wear if I don't apply a new layer of topcoat—so I do.

The combination of 1 layer of basecoat, 2 layers of nail polish color, and 1 layer of topcoat will make your nail polish last much longer than if you don't use base- and topcoat.

I recommend that you use the basecoat and topcoat from the same brand as your nail polish. Often, a nail polish color is part of a system, so the basecoat and topcoat are designed to work most optimally with the nail polish from the same brand. If you use Zoya nail polish, it therefore makes the most sense to use Zoya Basecoat and Zoya Topcoat. But there are exceptions. I, Camilla, am very fond of using CND Vinylux. In CND Vinylux, the basecoat is built into the nail polish. But my nails are naturally soft, so I need to use an extra strong basecoat. That's why I use OPI Nail Envy under ALL my manicures, even if the polish already contains a basecoat or the manufacturer recommends another type.
